Basketball Techniques - Post Moves

Post moves are some of the easiest basketball techniques to practice, but also one of the hardest techniques to perfect. Being able to be comfortable and score when you are close to the basket is one way to easily increase your scoring average as well as get to the free throw line. Making a post move is more complicated than you might think. Highly successful post players have mastered several techniques:

1. Getting great post position and getting open

2. Being able to execute a variety of moves that they are great at to score.

Below will focus on each of these basketball techniques along with tips.

Getting Open

Getting open in the post is all about how hard you work. Even before you make a basketball post move, you must be open to receive the ball. Getting great position in the post is just as hard as scoring in the post and will determine if you will get the ball or not.

The optimum place to receive the ball is on the low block or closer to the basket within the paint. However, you do not want to post-up under the basket as this will not give you a good angle to make a move and you might be called for a 3-second violation if you are in lane long enough.

To maximize the chance of getting the ball, you will want to post-up on the block as big as possible. This means that you should be in an athletic position, with your knees bent, rear end out, and your arms out wide looking to receive the ball.

After getting big, you will want to seal your defender in order to receive the ball. The most basic way of doing this is by feeling him or her with your rear end, and not your arms. If you feel him or her going one way, shuffle your feet to that same way to keep him or her behind you.

Getting Open When Your Defender Is Fronting You

If your defender is fronting you in the post, an easy way to get in front of him/her is to swing your leg through. To do this, start by getting close to one of the sides of your defender. Next, bring your inside leg (the one that is closest to the middle of your defenders body) over and in front of your defenders outside leg.

Now your leg will be in-front of theirs. You will now be able to use your body to slide in-front of him/her to get open.

So now that you are open, it is up to your teammates to get you the ball.

Tips For Getting Open

- If you are flashing across the lane to the post, stop when you are 3/4 across the lane to post up. This will help you get deep position and make it extremely hard for your defender to stop you without fouling when you get the ball.

- Keep your feet moving. If your feet go dead, this is when your defender will be able to get around to a front and prevent you from getting the ball.

Post Moves

There are a variety of moves to do in the post. They can be used individually or put together to form combinational moves if your defender is more skilled. They are seen below...
